September 2011
This is to be a facilitated and targeted exchange between Saltwater Traditional Owners of the Girringun Region, north Queensland Australia and North Coast and the North Coast – Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society, Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. This exchange is to be hosted by North Coast – Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society, as a learning opportunity between groups involved in community-based integrated management that could potentially lead to longer term collaboration.
The focus of the project is the sharing of regional strategic sea country planning experiences in the respective participants’ homelands. The exchange includes guided travel through some of the North Coast communities in British Columbia, comprising the traditional lands, seas and waters associated with the Gitga’at, Gitxaala, Metlakatla, Kitsumkalum, Haisla and Kitselas First Nations of British Columbia (BC).
Below is the video address from Philip Rist – Executive Officer of the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation to Canadian First Nations. Delivered by Melanie Zurba to the North Coast – Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society in March 2010.
